The Canal

Lancaster Canal Gallery

Description

The Lancaster Canal is unique; one of the most scenic canals now on the network, this gentle waterway offers wonderful views of the Silverdale coast, Forest of Bowland and rolling countryside of Wyre.

During the late 18th century the industrial demand for transport between Preston and Kendal gave rise to proposals to build a canal. A renowned engineer called John Rennie produced a survey which included several aqueducts but only eight locks near the Kendal end at Tewitfield. Based on this survey, construction began in 1792. Being a contour canal (built along the natural lie of the land) it took only 7 years to construct (a remarkable achievement) and the canal between Preston and Tewitfield was opened in 1799 and included a large aqueduct carrying the canal 62 feet (19 m) above the River Lune north of Lancaster. In 1819 the north section from Tewitfield was extended to Kendal and a short spur built to connect the canal to Glasson Docks. The Glasson Arm, as it is known, has six locks to enable the canal to achieve sea level at Glasson Docks (although not navigable by Crabtree Narrowboats, it makes a very enjoyable walk down to the docks).

In 1968 the construction of the M6 motorway cut through the canal north of Tewitfield and the section from there to Kendal was abandoned and the canal shortened, thus removing the eight locks from navigation.

Today the Lancaster Canal runs for 42 lock-free miles through, in the main, pleasant pasture-lands and overlooked for most of the way by the foothills of the Pennines. Just north of Lancaster the sea shore is only a few hundred yards to the west and you can see the sands of Morecambe Bay and across to the magnificent mountains of the Lake District. A truly beautiful canal.
